The boat heist quickly shifted from theft to trickery. Escher tried to bluff his way onto Kellem Stormforge’s ship as a town guard with an arrest warrant, but the crew knew their rights and called his bluff. Nelda tried another angle, posing as a friend and suggesting they could hitch a ride. The ship’s captain, Teft, said he disliked the owner, Stormforge, and that if the group could legally remove him and produce a writ of ownership, he and the crew would work for them. Nelda visited a potion maker and got a “potion of clouded judgment” to help persuade the “sick” Stormforge. A disoriented Stormforge “signed the ship over to the party” (the documents were forged by Wilbur) and was escorted off to “the hospital.” The group took control “legally,” without a fight. The ship was the Cresting Pearl Horizon.

The new crew, led by Captain Teft, immediately presented a union contract. After some light haggling over their share of any treasure, the group agreed to the terms: five gold a week per crew member, a 15% share of profits, and universal healthcare. They met the nine-member crew, a mix of dwarves, a goblin, and others, including a dwarf named Rock and the helmsman, who insisted on being called “The Lopen.” During the introductions, a woman named Alana came up in connection with Kip, who was apparently engaged to her. Kip found this very surprising. Arghen slept through the whole thing, and Ellery had to lay him down on the deck.

They set sail for Chonkerton, a trip expected to take seven to nine business days, and settled into life aboard. Kip, a harsh food critic, openly insulted the cook’s stew and suggested the second cook take over. The others tried to smooth things over by praising the cook’s cheddar bay biscuits. Kip, very much by the book, made it clear he wanted no part in their scheming and deliberately avoided learning how they had gotten the ship, since he would be obligated to turn them in if he knew. As the ship headed for its destination under new management, Captain Teft pointed out a merchant vessel on the horizon.
