Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 30 of 83 · Arc: Death and the In-Between · Where: Saline Coast

After Wilbur’s assassination, Ellery called Sylas Riverstride for help, explaining that Wilbur had been ambushed and stabbed by Tobias Blackwood. While they grieved, the party found a set of hastily written farewell notes from Wilbur, one for each of them. He told Ellery to look to the future and not be defined by her past. He encouraged Kip to bend the rules and see his own kindness. He advised Escher to use his talents for more than serving himself. And he urged Nelda to keep using her powerful voice to fight for others. The group shared how Wilbur had brought them together and made them feel they belonged, and Sylas arrived and began setting up to help.

Sylas explained that when a person dies, their soul briefly pauses in a realm called the in-between before passing on, which is what makes resurrection possible. A soul can fail to return for two reasons: something is blocking it, or it has chosen to move on. Using turnips in a magical ritual, Kip learned that Wilbur was scared but willing to come back, which meant something was holding his spirit. To save him, the group would have to enter the in-between themselves and clear the way. The ritual required an exceptionally large diamond, worth around 10,000 gold.

Such diamonds were scarce because a mysterious “bird” had been snatching them up, which the group suspected was one of The Cacklers. Luckily, they learned that a Velvet Truffle Company ship leaving that evening had a large diamond on its manifest, and Catman quickly procured it. Ellery, Escher, Nelda, and Kip agreed to make the dangerous journey. They held hands in a circle as Sylas performed the ritual. The room trembled, and when they opened their eyes they stood in a misty, waterlogged realm, determined to find Wilbur and bring him back.
