Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 29 of 83 · Arc: Death and the In-Between · Where: Saline Coast

The group discussed Arghen’s job: recovering a family heirloom from the merchant ship Sapphire Tide, which had been wrecked by a dragon. The employer, Kellem Stormforge, explained that a gold dragon had attacked the ship, torn it apart, and seemed to be searching the wreckage for something. Nelda was skeptical, saying dragons weren’t known to behave like that. After some haggling, in which Escher talked Kellem into a 500-gold advance, the group took the job. As they prepared to leave, they spotted Captain Eric Stormshield nearby, and Nelda confronted him over his past actions and possible corruption.

Stormshield pulled Wilbur aside and accused him of playing games and giving false information that led to Tobias Bigsby’s arrest. He produced a signed document from Wilbur’s “Fellowship Against the Machine” as proof of baseless accusations. Wilbur shot back with a hint about a blemish on Stormshield’s record involving the death of a child. As Stormshield stood stunned, an invisible attacker ambushed Wilbur and stabbed him with a poisoned blade. Wilbur recognized the voice: it was Tobias Blackwood, the man who had commissioned the smoke bomb. Blackwood dropped Wilbur’s own smoke bomb to cover his escape, but the group stopped him.

As the group seized the attacker, Wilbur collapsed and died from his wounds. His final thoughts were full of regret, wondering whether his inventions had brought more good or evil into the world. He remembered childhood play-fights that felt nothing like the real, fatal blow he had just taken. His last moment was one of hope that his new friends could use what he had made for good, and then his soul left his body. Stormshield arrested Wilbur’s killer, Tobias Blackwood.
