Quick facts

Race: Adult gold dragon · Title: Sweetfang of the Sugar Cartel · Allegiance: Partner of the Velvet Truffle Company · Status: Alive, holding Arghen (as of C2 Session 83)

Khalor the Dreamreaper is an adult gold dragon who works in partnership with the Velvet Truffle Company. He killed the Prince of Bureetoe, which made him Arghen’s sworn enemy, and in Session 83 he carried Arghen away.

Overview

Khalor can take human form. In Buttermere, an informant described a tall, unnaturally skinny merchant with gold eyes and a “voice like a furnace” seen talking with VTC members. He can also take the exact likeness of another person.

He appears to be the VTC’s partner rather than its servant, and uses the company’s technology to hatch his children. He carries the rank of Sweetfang in the Sugar Cartel.

Among his known abilities: he is immune to fire, and his roar can banish someone to a harmless demiplane. He breathes fire, and also has a weakening breath that saps strength. His Dream Harvest leaves victims sluggish and heavy, and can put them into a deep magical sleep. He can also pounce on prey and carry it off.

History

The Sapphire Tide (Sessions 28–34)

A gold dragon attacked the merchant ship Sapphire Tide, tore it apart and seemed to search the wreckage. Its owner, Kellem Stormforge, hired the party to recover a family heirloom from the wreck, and Arghen took the job for a chance at the dragon.

In Session 33, “Encounter with Khalor I,” the party found the chest. The dragon burst out of the wreckage, thanked them for their “help,” and lunged for it. Ellery hung on and blasted him at point-blank range until his roar banished her to a demiplane. His fire downed Kip and Nelda, and he struck Arghen with a bolt of radiant energy before flying off with the chest. The party followed him to an island full of VTC ships, where they learned the chest was being sent to a “mistress.”

Arghen pulled out a petrified golden dragon talon and swore his honor demanded he kill the dragon. Kip and Nelda were moved and agreed to help, and the others followed.

Buttermere (Sessions 39–43)

After the assassination at Hamhock Harbor, Escher told the party he believed the dragon worked for the VTC and might have killed Arghen’s friend on its orders. In “Encounter with Khalor II” (Session 43), on the cliffs outside Buttermere, a VTC member told the dragon that an experiment with seven eggs had gone well and six showed signs of life. Arghen stepped forward and accused him of killing the Prince of Bureetoe of the Dwarven Isles, and said he would die for it. The dragon dropped his human disguise and asked how far Arghen was willing to chase him for revenge. Arghen answered, “to the ends of Arlia.” The dragon burned Ellery and Kip and flew off.

Named (Session 44)

Puss Wayne gave the party his name, Khalor the Dreamreaper, and told them he was in partnership with the VTC, using its technology to hatch his children, and that the eggs might be at VTC headquarters on Choco Island. The party debated whether the hatchlings would be evil, and Arghen argued for destroying them.

The Salt Desert

In Session 71, Escher overheard a report to Cadbury Vex that the dragon had fully completed his assignment in the Salt Desert and was being recalled to Choco Island within the week, which meant the eggs were ahead of schedule and Gideon Velgrave would be “insufferable.”

The gallows (Sessions 81–83)

At the VTC’s request, Khalor shapeshifted into a perfect mirror image of Catman and took his place on the gallows in Splendor Festival Square as bait for the FAM. When the charges were read he pleaded “guilty as charged” and then turned into an adult gold dragon.

In “Encounter with Khalor III” (Session 82), his weakening breath sapped Kip and Wilbur, and his Dream Harvest left Nelda and Wilbur heavy with lethargy. He greeted Masha with “welcome back” when she appeared in front of him in midair, and battered her on the way down. He mocked her summoned dragon as a “pretender of a dragon” and told her, “Let me show you the breath of a real dragon.” Looking over the battle, he said quietly, “I thought he would follow me.”

In Session 83, Masha ringed him in a wall of fire, forgetting that gold dragons are immune to it. He flew out, burned Ellery’s back, and spotted Arghen. “That’s who I’ve been looking for,” he said. He closed a talon around Arghen, banished Ellery again, and carried Arghen away. He appears to want Arghen alive, since he could have killed him and didn’t.

The sleeping sickness

Arghen had a long-running habit of sleeping through battles and falling into trances that lasted days or weeks. After the gallows fight, Nelda fell asleep sitting upright, exactly the way Arghen used to. That confirmed Arghen’s long sleeps had come from Khalor all along.
