Quick facts
Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 41 of 83 · Arc: Khalor and the Company at Sea · Where: Buttermere
In Buttermere, the group went to a local tavern for a meal and found the menu was nothing but biscuits and various liquids, with a strict “bring your own meat” policy. An exasperated Arghen left and came back shortly with a wild boar he had killed somewhere in the city. While they waited for their food, Wilbur found a poster for a regional battle of the bands called Breadstock, happening the next day, and declared they should enter as “The FAM Band.” They also talked about getting tattoos. Nelda suggested a design of the instruments they had picked for the band, and Arghen offered to design a “dead dragon” tattoo for them.
Escher, meanwhile, went on a secret errand. Using the code phrase “I heard there’s a private tasting in the cellar tonight,” he got into a clandestine meeting with a woman from a group called the Pale Fang. She confirmed the assassination of the Velvet Truffle Company official was a success but criticized Escher’s “artless,” public methods, calling them theater rather than poetry. She docked his pay, giving him 4,500 gold instead of the promised 8,000, and gave him a new codename: “Smoke.” She handed him a new assignment and warned him to be subtler this time, or she would know he was nothing more than a “sharp blade.”
Escher rejoined the party, and Arghen led them to an informant with news of the gold dragon. The paranoid man said he had heard credible reports of a gold-scaled figure flying over the hills two nights earlier and landing on the cliffs outside town, making the rocks glow. He had also seen a tall, unnaturally skinny merchant with gold eyes and a “voice like a furnace” talking with Velvet Truffle Company members a week before. As the group headed for the cliffs, the informant became convinced they were being followed, which ended with Escher tying his shoes together and making him trip. Then Arghen looked back toward their ship and saw several Velvet Truffle Company members walking up the gangplank.
