Quick facts
Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 45 of 83 · Arc: Back on the Saline Coast · Where: Saline Coast, Mercenary’s Rest
The party discussed their next move, which centered on helping Kip’s mother, who needed a place to stay. The trip would take three and a half to four days. They also talked about the threat from the Velvet Truffle Company, noting that Escher was being hunted and that they should keep things “on the DL” until the company built a better case. Before they could leave, a journalist named Mira Jolip from the Coast Chronicle burst into the Mercenary’s Rest wanting a retrospective interview on how the group had transformed the coast. The party declined, but Nelda gave an official quote: she did not support her father’s campaign because their values didn’t line up. After a brief, judgmental exchange about Ellery’s love of “smut books,” Mira accepted a top-shelf shot and left.
Their investigations soon pulled them back into conflict with the company. At Violetta’s potion shop they found she had been replaced by a young man named Greg. The party noticed he was wearing a VTC uniform under his clothes. Under pressure, Greg admitted that Miss Violetta had been caught committing fraud against his company. She had tried to charge two purple worm poisons to the VTC’s tab under the name of Tobias Blackwood, who was already dead (it had been Escher in disguise), and the unforgiving company seized her shop.
The party then visited Ruckus Law, where the lawyer Rusty Dunlaw advised Mr. Elmheart, meaning Kip, whose legal surname was Elmheart at the time because of the marriage contract. The contract carried a magical bind and the words “till death do us part,” and could only be overridden by proof of coercion strong enough to negate the divine witness placed on it.
A young man then rushed in to report that Victor Blackwood was in trouble at the morgue. Bran recognized it as their cue, and the party went to the morgue and crept down the stairs. At the bottom they found Victor face down, unconscious and bleeding a little where his head had struck the floor. A moment later a figure lumbered into view: a grotesquely bloated body in the remains of a fine suit, dragging a huge corroded scimitar, with gas hissing softly through tears in its flesh. It turned toward them, showing the misshapen face of Tobias Blackwood. The supposedly dead man had returned.
