Thalorian Valedriss was a wealthy, politically ambitious Saline Coast elf and the father of Nelda. He ran for mayor as the Velvet Truffle Company’s candidate and died trying to protect the daughter he had disowned.
History
Father and daughter
On the day of the masquerade ball, Thalorian demanded that Nelda attend Cedric Lightharbor’s speech so he could arrange her marriage to Cedric Lightharbor Jr. When she refused, he cut her off financially (Session 9). After Nelda’s prison break, Captain Stormshield arrested Thalorian and his wife for harboring a fugitive (Session 20). Mayor Windrider ordered them released, but Thalorian, furious and feeling betrayed, disowned Nelda and demanded she return a valuable family heirloom. As he walked off berating his wife, Nelda cast dissonant whispers on him, leaving him with permanent injuries (Session 28).
The mayoral race
Thalorian ran for mayor against Puss Wayne, who called him a puppet of the VTC (Session 44). Nelda told the Coast Chronicle she did not support his campaign because their values were misaligned (Session 45). When she visited him before leaving the city, he warned her coldly that the VTC was monitoring her friends and that he would not protect her if she opposed them, then ordered her out (Session 48). His other child, Eldric, was beaten by VTC guards after being caught searching his desk. During the campaign Escher disguised himself as Thalorian and harassed the local merfolk to ruin his reputation (Session 57).
Death
On the night of his death, Thalorian argued with the VTC archmage Lazra Vant. Lazra told him policies he had been promised were off the table would be put in quietly, and Thalorian protested that they would gut half the dock workers. He demanded a guarantee that his daughter would live; Lazra would only promise she wouldn’t be killed, and gave him two days to win the election and deliver the Fellowship. Nelda and Escher, hidden upstairs, heard him agree to hand over the Fellowship in exchange for her safety.
When the fight broke out, Thalorian grabbed a dagger off the wall, cried “Not my daughter. You promised,” and lunged at Lazra. He was struck down by an arcane burst before Nelda killed Lazra (Session 58, Session 81). Nelda cradled him as he apologized for the man he had been and urged her to stay strong, and he died. The VTC took over the city and arrested Catman for his murder.
His soul later turned up in Nelda’s cursed glaive. When Ruby purged the trapped souls, she found that Thalorian’s had been shielding Nelda from the worst of the weapon’s torment (Session 68).
