The group split to tackle both goals against the clock. Nelda and Escher snuck into the upper floors of the Valedriss mansion and overheard a private deal between Thalorian and Lazra Vant: her father agreed to hand over the “Fellowship” in exchange for Nelda’s safety. At the same time, in a remote coastal cave, Kip, Wilbur, and Alana entered the hut of Veshka Knoteater, an enchantress who specializes in permanent magical bindings. Veshka refused a simple annulment. The only ways to break her enchantments, she said, were a new and more restrictive agreement or her own death. Both situations turned violent. Nelda accidentally alerted guards at the estate, and the enchantress trapped the negotiators in the cave inside a stinking cloud.
In the cave, Ellery arrived just in time to join the fight against Veshka and helped Kip land the final blow with his staff, killing the enchantress and dissolving the marriage bond. At the Valedriss estate, the fight turned deadly as Lazra Vant unleashed concentrated necrotic energy. Thalorian joined the fight to defend Nelda and was mortally wounded, while Escher and Nelda struck back with blade and magic. Nelda unleashed a powerful thunderwave that destroyed the Velvet Truffle Company guards and killed Lazra Vant.
After the archmage fell, Nelda cradled her father as he apologized for the man he had been and urged her to stay strong before he died. With the authorities closing in, Nelda took her father’s sending stone and warned her brother, Eldric, to take their mother and flee the city immediately. The group reunited in the Saline Coast Sewers, looted the enchantress’s magical belongings, and went looking for their next lead. They ended up standing before The Whisper at his hidden home, declaring that they were ready to leave for North City.
