Inside the Rotunda, Chancellor Fenwick Ansible assured his council that the noise was a minor disturbance at the eastern works. He insisted the new enforcement units he had approved would reduce it to a line in a maintenance log, just as Coghaven had met every morning for forty years. Escher slipped into his office, found the hidden compartments where they always are, and recovered documents, 2,500 gold, and a journal bundled with the Chancellor’s seal of office. The party argued over the documents, which confirmed that even Ansible didn’t know the full answer, because the machine had taken over everything.
Ellery hurled Wilbur’s smoke device into the council chamber, sending the gnomes screaming and scattering. Ansible hit his panic button, and drones flooded the Rotunda, some crawling down from the ceiling on spider legs while a disco drone smashed in through a window. The invisible party went for a portrait hiding a heavy metal vault, and Escher tackled the Chancellor to search him for a key. When a drone seized Ansible’s leg and started a tug-of-war with Escher, Escher drew his flame blade and cut off the Chancellor’s leg, then dragged him over and pressed his eye to the vault’s retinal scanner. With one last lock picked, the vault opened onto a staircase leading down. Wilbur slipped in and heaved the vault door shut behind them.
