Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 74 of 83 · Arc: Coghaven · Where: Coghaven
While the others slept, Ellery drank a potion of invisibility, left her gear and a letter behind, and crept out wearing only her bracelet, a healing potion, and the FAM’s sending stone. Her plan was to get captured so the party could track the stone, and to offer herself in exchange for Cabba, since she was the stronger of the two. Nelda caught her, clipping her with a thunderwave, and confronted her. The guards would take everything she carried, and her bracelet could lead the machine straight to the Black Parade’s compound. Nelda turned Ellery’s own advice to Escher back on her: she didn’t have to do everything alone. Ellery agreed to take off the bracelet and come back, but only after Nelda promised they would act first thing in the morning, even if the rest of the group refused.
In a huddle with the Black Parade, Ellery explained that the machine was probably running on Cabba’s ki. Bram Briar proposed going straight for Chancellor Fenwick Ansible’s office, since the Chancellor must hold the secrets to taking the machine down. As the group bickered, Wilbur closed his eyes and tuned out the noise until he felt the wisp of a phantom hand on his shoulder and heard a voice urging him to take back the city. He rallied the room to shake things up, then attempted a crowd-surf that landed him straight on the floor.
As the party and the Black Parade moved out, drones swept in and spotlighted them, setting off sirens. While the Black Parade held off a second wave, the FAM destroyed their attackers, with Ellery uppercutting one drone so it could be blasted apart. Gen realized it had been an ambush and demanded to know whether everyone had ditched their bracelets. When Nelda pointedly reminded Ellery that she had told her to take hers off, Kip quipped that he had made a necklace out of everyone’s discarded bracelets, and the source of the leak was never settled. The group pressed on to the Rotunda, which was swarming with security forces organizing patrols, while a drone reported to a gnome on a balcony. The Black Parade split off to create a distraction, promising the party would know the signal when they saw it. Moments later, an explosion tore across the far side of the district.
