Quick facts
Host: The Collector · Location: North City · Format: monster qualifier, battle royale down to sixteen, one-on-one bracket · Prize: a pick from the Collector’s collection · Winner: Elyon · Runner-up: Greene · Told in: C1 Chapter 06 · Aftermath: Terra takes Sophie’s place as the Collector’s property
The Greatest Below the Heavens is the martial arts tournament the Collector runs in North City. The Cacklers spent about two weeks lying low in the city beforehand, and the event ended with Terra staying behind so that Sophie could walk out. The Cell Games later borrowed some of its rules.
Registration
Greene allied with Jebidiah while the party waited. Registration took place in a courtyard, where they met Master Toshi and Goku. The two entered as training, and Toshi argued with his old rival Master Crane, who had once taught Elyon. Master Korrin had already given Elyon permission to enter as his pupils (C1 Chapter 05).
The opening speech
The Collector laid out three phases: a monster qualifier, a battle royale to cut the field to sixteen, and a one-on-one bracket. The winner would choose a prize from his collection, and killing an opponent meant disqualification. His Collector’s Gems performed for the crowd, and Sophie appeared among them as Emerald, Terra’s ex. Juliette and Terra later learned that every Gem was under contract to him.
During the tournament
- Elyon learned that Meo was the Thorned Rose, which opened a rift with Juliette.
- Mercenary Tao, Crane’s brother and the assassin who killed Ashryn, attacked Greene in his bed. The party chased him down.
- The first round was against Kirby the Dreamwarrior, a dream eater from the FeyWild.
- In the battle royale, Sgt. Major Maroon hunted Juliette and Toshi helped her. The party all made the final sixteen.
- Oolong beat Recoome of the Ginyu Force, the previous champion, in the quarterfinals. He then vanished and was disqualified for missing his semifinal.
- The final was Greene against Elyon. Greene pole-vaulted up the Power Pole and Elyon knocked him out of bounds with a Kienzan. Elyon won.
The prize and the trade
The Collector paid Greene 25,000 gold for second place. The party found Oolong fighting an automaton in the Star Orbs room. The Collector said Oolong had been meant for his collection and offered to free him if they brought back the vase holding King Piccolo, stolen from Turtle Island.
Terra begged for Sophie’s release. The Collector offered a trade: Emerald could leave if Terra stayed and worked for him. Terra agreed. The bracers moved from Sophie’s wrists to Terra’s, and the party and Sophie were escorted out.
What came of the trade is told in The Collector Conflict.
