Role: Ancient martial arts master · Home: The coast of Ginger Peach · Family: Fortuneteller Yaba (sister) · Status: Alive. Killed by Perfect Cell at The Cell Games, then restored by the Cacklers’ wish on the Star Orbs (C1.5 Chapter 03)

Master Toshi is an ancient hermit and martial arts master who lives on the coast of Ginger Peach. He trained The Ox-Queen’s father, mentored the first Cacklers, and gave his life trying to seal King Piccolo before Oolong brought him back in a new body. Twenty years later he fought at the Cell Games and was killed by Perfect Cell, then brought back by the Cacklers’ wish.

Overview

Toshi was one of the heroes who stopped King Piccolo long ago. In his telling, his own master, Master Mutatio, sealed Piccolo in a magical container for the rest of time using the Mafuba, a technique so draining that it likely kills the user, as it killed Mutatio. Toshi also studied under Master Korrin, and he has a long-running rivalry with Master Crane.

History

Fire Mountain

At the Ox-Queen’s request, the party found Toshi at his home on the coast. Before he would help, he had them protect a clutch of hatching sea turtles from stirges and two kenku on their way to the ocean. That night he spoke with each of them alone. He told Greene the story of the fight against King Piccolo and gave him his Power Pole. He gave Elyon his Flying Nimbus and talked with her about self-confidence and Master Korrin. He gave Juliette a pair of scouter lenses and sympathized with her over her recent loss.

At Fire Mountain, the Ox-Queen asked him to fire his strongest kamehameha wave at the cursed peak. He hesitated, then blew the mountain to pieces, castle and all. He then pointed the party to his sister, Fortuneteller Yaba, who could find the remaining Star Orbs.

The tournament

Toshi came to the Greatest Below the Heavens tournament in North City with Goku, both competing as training. In the courtyard before registration he got into an argument with his rival Master Crane. During the battle royale he helped Juliette escape Sgt. Major Maroon.

The war in North City

After the Collector fell, the Cacklers asked Toshi and Bulma Briefs to meet them at the Cackler Barrel to talk about the war. He was with the party after the naval battle in North City and remarked that he had never seen Greene turn into a tiger.

Death and reincarnation

Toshi traveled with the Cacklers, Sophie and Goku to West City for the final fight with King Piccolo. When the party was on the edge of collapse, the worn-down Toshi set a small jar on the ground and performed the Mafuba. The energy caught Piccolo and pulled him toward the jar, but the jar toppled before the seal closed. Piccolo rose, said “Well, if you ask me, Mafuba is a very poor choice of last words,” and killed the unconscious Toshi.

Greene finished the job with the same technique and sealed the jar with Toshi’s magical talisman. Goku found Toshi’s body and cried, “Master Toshi, wake up. It’s not fair.” Oolong pushed Goku aside and cast reincarnate. From the spiraling leaves rose a younger, muscular man, still bald, still with a mustache. Toshi said he felt amazing and went straight to helping the party cover their tracks.

The Cell Games

In Campaign 1.5, Toshi returned to the battlefield “after a nearly twenty-year hiatus with a new body,” introduced by Jimmy Firecracker as the mentor to Greene. His kamehameha reduced two Cell Juniors to a pile of ash (“Yeah, still got it.”), and he dodged in and out of Cell’s falling meteors, telling the Cacklers, “You guys should keep up with your training.” Cell turned on him (“Remove this trash”), caved his face in, and later fired a kamehameha straight through him. When the beam cleared, there was a pile of ash where Toshi had stood. After the Games, the Cacklers summoned the dragon with the Star Orbs and wished to restore the lives of everyone Cell had killed and absorbed, and Toshi lived again (C1.5 Chapter 03).
