Quick facts
Type: Performers and enforcers · Master: The Collector · Base: The Gems’ dorm and barracks, North City · Status: Broken up after the Collector’s death
The Collector’s Gems were The Collector’s celebrity performers. Each was named after a gemstone and known for a particular talent. Behind the stage they were bound to him by contract, essentially as indentured servants, and the stronger ones served as his enforcers.
Overview
At the opening ceremony of the Greatest Below the Heavens tournament, five Gems performed. While the tournament was underway, Juliette and Terra Misu Umber confronted the Gems and discovered they were all under contract to the Collector. Emerald was held by magical bracers. When Terra traded herself for Sophie, Emerald’s bonds left Sophie’s wrists and clasped onto Terra’s.
Members and affiliates
- Topaz: A tall, handsome elf man who sang in Elvish at the opening ceremony.
- Amethyst: A brunette human woman who sang a powerful ballad in the common tongue. She asked Terra about the wizard Yamcha (Visser 3), ran the Collector’s job in Beerlia with Terra, Masha and Vath, fought beside the Collector in the final showdown, and died there.
- Obsidian: A kenku girl whose song mixed bird sounds and mimicked voices.
- Lapis: A goliath drummer.
- Emerald (Sophie Ghiradelli): A red-haired dwarf with bright green eyes who sang in Dwarvish. She was Terra’s ex-girlfriend and had written an internationally famous pop song about their breakup.
- Sapphire: Held Tala captive in the Gems’ dorm. Ambushed the Cacklers outside the stadium and died in the fight.
- Ruby: Ambushed the Cacklers with Sapphire, using psychic attacks. Sophie, transformed into a T-rex, bit off Ruby’s upper torso. Not to be confused with Ruby (Juliette’s daughter).
- Jasper: Fought in the final showdown and taunted Sophie there: “Emerald, we used to be so close. You almost kissed me once.”
- The Collector (master): held the Gems bound to him by contract.
- Pizzazz: One of the Collector’s lieutenants. Oolong absorbed Pizzazz’s DNA during the final showdown, and Pizzazz died there.
History
After Sophie’s mission to stop King Piccolo’s release failed, the Collector stripped her of her leniency and sent her and Obsidian to their barracks. When the Cacklers tried to free Sophie and Tala, Sapphire and Ruby ambushed them, and Sophie’s transformation killed them both. The Collector answered with a wanted ad accusing Emerald of their murders. The Cacklers, disguised as the Collector and Gems including Amethyst and Pizzazz, got the North City Times to report that Emerald was dead, supposedly killed by Amethyst and Jasper during a capture attempt.
At the final showdown, Terra freed herself from the bracers and killed the Collector. Amethyst and Pizzazz died in the same fight.
