The group regrouped at the Mercenary’s Rest after tracking down Felix, the zookeeper who should have been watching the wolves. He had abandoned his post for a romantic rendezvous, which only made Escher admire how “cool” the man was. At the tavern the group met a range of colorful patrons. Kip successfully ordered a special chocolate milk, and Escher tried to buy whiskey despite looking far too young.
Talk turned to everyone’s backgrounds, which led to some awkward and culturally insensitive moments. Racist remarks about gnomes and halflings were quickly shut down, but the mood stayed tense when Ellery revealed her Saiyan heritage, prehensile tail included. Some were awed and some were uncomfortable. One patron declared her tail “not of God,” a reminder that the group were outsiders in this strange city.
The day ended with a public speech by the former mayor, Cedric Lightharbor. He used the recent tragedies, the escaped wolves and the death of a young woman supposedly killed by a sea creature, to attack the current mayor, Eliza Windrider. He blamed her negligent policies and focus on tourism for drawing criminals and lawlessness to the Saline Coast. Partway through, one of Wilbur’s smoke bomb devices was hurled at the stage in what looked like an assassination attempt. In the chaos, Lightharbor rallied the crowd and cast himself as a valiant leader fighting for the city’s soul.
