After the attack on Cedric Lightharbor, Wilbur found his smoke bomb invention at the center of a new conspiracy. Escher was set on finding the girl from Felix’s room, believing she was tied to both the attack on the former mayor and the recent death blamed on a sea creature. The mayor’s office stonewalled the party with bureaucracy, though they managed to book a meeting for the end of the day. Things became more urgent when Wilbur returned to his shop and found that a mysterious figure had broken in.
The intruder was Catman, who arrived with Basil, his “great mouse detective.” Catman at first suspected Wilbur. He revealed that the sea creature’s victim, Isabella Thorne, was an investigative journalist, and that he was on his way to the morgue to examine her body. He insisted Wilbur and his companions come along, drawing them deeper into the shadowy politics and crime of the Saline Coast.
At the morgue, Kip discovered that Isabella Thorne had not been killed by a sea creature at all. She had been stabbed, a detail the mortician seemed to have overlooked. That confirmed a cover-up. The group moved on to Isabella’s home to look for more evidence, but the house was set ablaze with a Molotov cocktail while they were inside. They fought the arsonists and found a note linking a “Yorn” and a “Yagra” to the crime, all acting on the orders of someone called “E.R.”
