Campaign: Campaign 2 · Session: 84 of 84 · Chapter: Liberating the Saline Coast · Where: Saline Coast: the Mercenary’s Rest, the harbor, Eugene’s farm, the eastern gate · The Odd At Sea
While Bran’s old party held the VTC at the door, the Fellowship escaped the Mercenary’s Rest with Wilbur as the decoy. Escher’s Queen of Clubs sprang into a towering demon, Masha conjured an illusion of Wilbur beside it, and the real Wilbur yelled “I pity the fool,” fired his pistols into the sky and flew off nearly unnoticed. The rest swam about 300 feet through the harbor under Pass Without Trace, several of them weighed down and forced to surface for air. VTC guards fired at the flying Wilbur and missed, while agents at the marina spotted the party and rowed after them. The group fled inland past Eugene’s farm, lost their pursuers in the woods, and climbed aboard the airship on a hilltop, where Escher’s Queen of Hearts produced an incubus that greeted The Lopen with a simple “hey.”
Aboard The Odd At Sea, the party argued over whether to raid Choco Island for Khalor’s eggs and Arghen or retreat to North City, until Wilbur snapped that he was forty years old, tired of fighting the VTC and dragons, and that someone else should make a plan for once. Nelda cast Animal Messenger on David, her snarl fin kitten, who curled up beside Wilbur and whispered, “I think we should stay at the Saline Coast.” David had spoken. Bran then sent word that local businesses had joined the fight and carved a path to the eastern gate, ending with “We need you.” The party rested aboard the ship.
On the morning of the sixth, four days before the election, the party found the eastern gate free of VTC guards. Locals cheered and hugged Wilbur, and Tom Farrar, his old grade school bandmate, led them through the rebel-held block to Bran, Elara, Sylas and Victor. The VTC’s new announcements pardoned Orin Coppercoin for poisoning the mayor, required a company-issued card to vote, and backed Darius Greenfield, Mayor Windrider’s former chief of staff, whom the VTC has bought off to throw his side of the race. Insulting wanted posters of the Fellowship had gone up, with Kip listed only as “the other one.” Herschel Nougat, head of VTC operations on the eastern continent, had arrived that morning aboard Gravy Bones’s ship to take personal command of the Saline Coast. The party also realized that Catman’s orb had ticked down to “ERROR” that morning. They set their goals: find Gravy Bones, take down Herschel, destroy the fleet, unrig the election on the 10th, and eventually kill a dragon.
Outside the barricade, Cedric Lightharbor Sr., flanked by eight VTC guards, declared through a magical megaphone that the rebellion was not recognized and would be crushed within hours. For a moment he met Wilbur’s eyes and silently mouthed “help me” before returning to the docks. The party chose not to take the bait, reasoning that a fight would only bring retaliation. They split up, with the stealthiest members heading into the city with sending stones to scout the VTC while Kip, Cabba and the others fortified the barricades, and Escher set out to trace the VTC’s chain of command.
